Which Website Platform Is Right for Your Business?

There is no single best website platform. Webflow suits most service businesses and Shopify suits businesses that sell products online, while WordPress, Wix and Squarespace each suit different needs. The better question is which platform fits what your website has to do, who will manage it, and where you expect the business to be in two or three years.

What should you look at when choosing a platform?

Most people compare platforms on price or on the name they recognise. We would start with four things: how much design and content control you need, whether the site exists to generate enquiries or take orders, who will maintain it, and what it costs to run once it is live.

How Webflow, Shopify, WordPress, Wix and Squarespace compare

Webflow

Webflow gives you full control over design without being tied to a template. It produces clean code that supports fast loading and strong on-page SEO, and your team can edit text, images and pages without touching the layout. Hosting, security and updates are handled within the platform, so there are no plugins to keep patched. It is our usual recommendation for consultancies, clinics, trades, coaches and brands that need a website that reflects how they work.

Shopify

Shopify is built for selling. Products, inventory, payments and shipping sit in one system, and its app store covers most of what a growing shop needs. The trade-offs are less design freedom than Webflow, and monthly app costs that can build up if you need larger or more complex add-ons, so plan your setup before you start adding apps.

WordPress

WordPress is the most widely used website platform, with thousands of themes and plugins available. That flexibility is both its strength and its main cost: hosting, theme and plugins all need regular updates, and speed and security depend on how well the setup is maintained. It can be the right choice if you need a very specific plugin or have a developer maintaining the site. For most small and growing businesses, we find Webflow gives the same design freedom with far less upkeep.

Wix and Squarespace

Both get a simple website live quickly and suit small sites with a handful of pages. The limits appear later: you work inside their templates, design control is more restricted, and moving to another platform is harder than starting on the right one.

Which platform suits your business?

  • Service businesses that rely on enquiries, calls or bookings: Webflow is usually the strongest fit.
  • Brands and shops taking orders online: Shopify is usually the strongest fit.
  • Businesses with a developer on hand and very specific plugin needs: WordPress can be a strong fit.
  • Very small, simple sites that need to be live quickly: Wix or Squarespace can be enough.
  • Not sure which category you fall into: start with what the website needs to achieve.

The platform should follow the job your website has to do, not the other way round.

Who owns the website, and what does it cost to run?

Two questions worth asking any designer before you commit. We build your website and transfer it to your own Webflow or Shopify account, so you own it outright and are never locked in to us. Any platform subscription is then between you and Webflow or Shopify. The details are in our website design FAQs.

Can you move to a different platform later?

You can, but it is rarely painless. Moving usually means rebuilding the design, re-creating your content structure and setting up redirects so you keep your search rankings, so it is far easier to choose well at the start. If your current website is on WordPress or another platform and is holding you back, we can redesign or move it.

How this fits our packages

Our website packages cover both service businesses and online shops. Our Webflow web design and Shopify web design pages explain what we build and who each suits.

Frequently asked questions

Is Webflow better than Shopify?

Neither is better overall. Webflow suits service businesses and content-led websites, and Shopify suits businesses that sell products online. They solve different problems.

Is Webflow better than WordPress?

It depends on what you need. WordPress has the biggest ecosystem of plugins and themes, but that means managing hosting, updates and security yourself or paying someone to. Webflow includes hosting and security and gives you full design control without plugins, which is why it suits most small and growing service businesses.

Which is better for SEO, Webflow, Shopify or WordPress?

All three give you control over page titles, meta descriptions, URLs and sitemaps, although WordPress usually relies on plugins for some of it. Webflow is stronger for content-led sites, and Shopify is built around product and collection pages. Results still depend on the quality of your content and structure, not the platform alone.

Can I update a Webflow website myself?

Yes. After launch we walk you through how to edit text, images and pages, and we include two weeks of free support.

Can I move my existing website to Webflow or Shopify?

Yes. Whether your current website is on WordPress, Wix, Squarespace or Webflow, we can revamp it on Webflow, keeping the content you want to carry over, or build a completely new website from scratch. Tell us what you have now and we will advise on the best route.
