How AI Is Changing the Way Customers Find Your Business

For years, getting found online meant ranking on Google. That still matters, but more and more customers now skip the list of links and ask an AI tool for a recommendation instead. If your website doesn't clearly explain what you do, who you help and where you work, you can be invisible at the exact moment someone is ready to buy.

What has actually changed?

Two things are happening at once. First, Google now often answers before it lists. AI-written summaries, called AI Overviews, sit above the normal results, and they often give people enough of an answer that they never scroll down. Second, people are asking AI assistants directly. Tools like ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot are part of everyday life, and ChatGPT alone passed 900 million weekly users in early 2026. In both cases, an AI is reading websites, deciding which businesses fit the question and summarising them. Your website is no longer just talking to people. It's also briefing the AI that recommends you.

‍

AI Overviews now appear in 43% of Google searches, up from 15% a year earlier, according to Similarweb's 2026 research.

What does this mean for your website?

AI tools can only recommend what they can understand. Many small business websites have a stylish slogan but never say what the business actually does, bury their services in one long paragraph, or only mention their location in the footer. A person might work it out with a bit of effort. An AI building a quick answer usually won't, and it will recommend a business whose website makes it obvious instead.

How to make your website easy to recommend

  • Say exactly what you do, early: your headline and first paragraph should name your service and who it's for. "Car body repairs in Walsall" beats "Restoring your pride and joy".
  • Give each main service its own page: a clear heading and description for each one makes it far easier to match to a specific question.
  • Be clear about where you work: name the towns and areas you cover in your copy, not just your address in the footer.
  • Answer real questions: an FAQ section covering prices, timings and what's included gives AI tools ready-made answers to point to.
  • Show your proof on your own site: reviews, case studies and real examples of your work help people and AI decide you're credible.
  • Keep your details consistent and current: your name, phone number, address and services should match across your website, Google Business Profile and directories.

What hasn't changed?

None of this replaces the basics. AI tools still lean on the same signals search engines always have: a fast site that works well on mobile, clear page titles and descriptions, a complete Google Business Profile, genuine reviews, and content written for people rather than stuffed with keywords. If your site already does these well, you're in a good position. If not, AI search is one more reason to fix them.

Make sure you're the business that gets recommended

The way people find businesses is changing faster than most websites are, but the fix isn't complicated: be clear about what you do, who you help and where, and keep your site current. If your site needs more than a few tweaks, our guide to the signs your website needs a redesign is a good place to start. If you're also weighing up platforms, our guide to choosing a website platform compares the main options.

Frequently asked questions

What is AI search?

AI search is when a tool like ChatGPT, Gemini or Google's AI Overviews answers a question directly, using information gathered from websites, instead of only showing a list of links. For businesses, it means an AI often decides which names to mention before a customer clicks anything.

Does AI search mean SEO no longer matters?

No. AI tools rely on many of the same signals as search engines: clear content, good structure, a fast site and genuine reviews. Good SEO helps you show up in both normal results and AI answers.

How do I know if AI tools mention my business?

Ask them. Type the questions your customers would ask, such as "best car body repairs in Walsall", into ChatGPT, Gemini and Google, and see who gets recommended. Check again every few months, as the answers change.

Do I need a new website to show up in AI answers?

Not always. Clearer headlines, dedicated service pages, an FAQ section and up-to-date details can make a real difference on an existing site. If your site is hard to update or badly out of date, a redesign may be the quicker route.

Can Chapter Two Studios help with this?

Yes. We build Webflow and Shopify websites with clear structure, dedicated service pages and FAQs, so customers, search engines and AI tools can all see what you do, who you help and where you work. We can also review your current website and tell you what's worth changing.
